couple o' questions

Postby KU40 » Mon Jun 11, 2007 12:00 pm

Ok so...... my hard drive is starting to get filled up, mostly with music (20 gig capacity, maybe 10 gigs or so is music). So I was thinking about getting an external drive to just hold my music so that my main one would be more free and maybe run a bit faster too, not that it's slow now. But I figure most of those are USB port inputs, right? I only have two on my laptop, and one is tied up with the wireless internet. I like to keep my other one open because I often hook my ipod or camera up to it. So is it possible to split a USB port, or add another one? I just figure it would be better if the music drive was always hooked up as well so that my programs could find those files if they look for them, plus if I want to listen to music while my ipod recharges or something.

there was another one or two questions, but **** I can't remember them.

Oh and has anybody played that semi-old interstellar trading game that I'm trying to think of the name of? it's a little animated game and you choose a cargo ship then go between like 9-10 planets buying stuff and then selling them on other planets for more money to make a profit? once in a while pirates would attack you and steal all your stuff, or your ship broke down or something.
*Edit, nvm, found it. it's called Interstellar trader, haha. typed it in the google search and immediately found it. But I kept this part in here because it's a fun little game that somebody may like to try.

if you just put music on it....it does not have to be plugged in all the time....i dropped all my music on an external....mainly just for back up....it sits in a drawer...unused....until i format again :)

plug it in when you want to use it....when you're not using it....unplug it...

Just make sure it's USB 2.0 if your notebook is. No sense not getting all the speed.

And I use an external as well to keep my regular PC and notebook flying. I keep very little on either machine just for this reason. I keep almost all my music, vids, and info on an external so it can be used with either one. Maxtor One Touch rocks! :)

are there certain brands to steer towards or away from (not sure how reliability varies on these things)? I'm trying to stay as cheap as possible, and I don't see how I would need more than 40 gigs anytime in the near future.

Careful!

I said the same when I put together my 600GB array 5-6 years back.

In April, i upgraded to 2TB, still not sure it's enough.

As for quality, the Maxtor and WD units are both pretty decent.

jeezum-peets. I'm sure you do a lot more downloading or work on yours than I do. I've had this 20 gig hard drive for 5 years and still haven't filled it up. I don't keep movies or 40 games on it, it's basically just music and small programs (Office, picture & video editors, winISD) plus one or two games. Although if I get a big hard drive I'll probably be like well I bought it, might as well fill it up, and start putting a whole bunch of stuff on it I wouldn't otherwise.

NAS is what you need. I have one laying around here that takes a EIDE drive. I would let it go for the cheap. It can also connect via USB.
